Clamp Load

Clamp Load

Clamp Load

(OP)
The bolt is 25mm and the two different hole sizes are 26 and 32mm.  Would the clamp force or load be different in the larger hole? I expect the resultant stresses to be higher due to less contact area, but does this also effect clamp load?

Thanks for your help!

RE: Clamp Load

Yes,
see the Guide to Design Criteria for
Bolted and Riveted Joints, 2nd Edition,
Chapter 9, published by AISC.
American Institute of Steel Construction,
Inc.  Should be available on the internet.

The answer to your question is (all other factors being equal) yes the preload is higher for the larger hole.  This is due to the lower friction force developed at the bearing surface.
