Is it possible to pattern this

Is it possible to pattern this

Is it possible to pattern this

(OP)
I have this sample file. I'm trying to pattern the block seen on the left side all around the green part. Is this doable? Thanks.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

Yes it is.

It looks like you have a Multi-bodied part. So all you have to do is select the linear pattern and instead of selecting features you need to expand the option to "select bodies" instead. Of course when selecting linear pattern you also have to give it a direction to pattern along. This can be done by selecting a given edge from one of the other bodies in the part.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help Jon. But what I am after is a 3D pattern. where the block constantly changes direction in x, y and z and also goes all the way around to the bottom to meet again with the original block.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

Okay I'm confused now.

Do you want to create a feature that connects the two gray blocks that follows the green part? Or do you wnat to create instances of the block on the left that is below the green part?

I think you need to clairify what you want your end result to be.

Jon

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

You might try a curve driven pattern using the edge of the green part as the curve to follow. If you can't select the edge as the curve to follow, then extract the edge as a composite curve.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

Why not just do this in an assembly?  No need to use a pattern.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

The problem isn't opening a downloaded file ... it's gaining access to the URL.

The errror message I get is:-

bcvrf.yahoo.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again.

& all the best.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

I believe what m1mason is trying to do is pattern the "pusher" plate (at the left & on top of the green conveyor portion) such that it populates a complete circuit of the track.

& all the best.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

that's strange. It works on my end. I even tried it from a different computer thinking I might have the page cached on my hardrive.

Theophilus, how can you do it in Assy mode effeciently?

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

A curve driven pattern will only follow a planar curve, but a sketch driven pattern will follow a 3D sketch.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

Since it looks like you're really dealing with multiple parts, this is best handled within an assembly--assemblies are all about multiple parts, and will allow you to place components wherever you like.

If you want to use a pattern, you can drive the pattern in a variety of ways, such as a linear, circular or curve-driven or sketch-driven pattern, like MElam posted.

RE: Is it possible to pattern this

m1mason ... to answer your original question, you cannot place the "block" around the conveyor in one operation. You will have to use a combination of patterns.

& all the best.
