Trimming 1 solid to another in a weldment

Trimming 1 solid to another in a weldment

Trimming 1 solid to another in a weldment

(OP)
Is there a way to trim 1 solid structural member to another?  I placed a "T" perpendicular to an "I" beam (both of the same height) and I wanted to cope the "T" to fit perfectly against the "I".  Unfortunately the available end conditions do not have this as an option.  Is there another way to do this?

As always, thanks in advance for any help

If your using Weldments you can use the trim tool.

or

You can use use a combine\subtract

or

You can offset a surface and do a cut with surface

Here is what happens with the options you have suggested.

trim tool - SW tells me that the surfaces can not be trimmed  because they do not completely intersect.  (The top surfaces off the "I-beam" and the "T" are parallel and flat but overlapping).  Technically they share the same space.  I assume this is why I get this error.

combine\subtract - None of these options subtract just the overlapping material and leave the rest.  It removes the entire member that has the overlapping material.

cut with surface - does not seem to allow me to pick the surfaces I need.

I have only been using SW for a short time so it is probably just me doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on the options Scott has given or new suggestions would be appreciated.

Basically is there some way to remove overlapping material only?

They are seperate structural members in the tree.

cygnas,

You do know how to apply constrained sketch features at the assembly level, right?

Instead of editing your part, try creating the sketch and the subsequent cut, at the assembly level.  I have done this on weldment drawings.  You can set the scope of an assembly cut, so that part_A get cut, and not parta_B

This all allows your to model a process in which parts are cut out in the shop, and then cut further before welding in the next shop or out in the field.

File says, "Can not open, Future Version".  Can you send in a 2004 format?  Thanks again for your time.

In the weldment Trim/Extend feature, set the corner type (at the top of the property manager) to one of the End Butt types instead of the default first one.  I got it to work that way.
