Part custom properties and BOM

Part custom properties and BOM

Part custom properties and BOM

(OP)
Hello to all

I have a question about custom part properties and their use in assembly BOM.

Let's say that Part A is being used in 3 assemblies A1, A2 and A3 (for the sake of simplicity, I have taken 3 assemblies, it could be many more). Each of these assemblies contains a different number (instances) of Part A.

A1: 10 instances of Part A
A2: 5 instances of Part A
A3: 2 instances of Part A

Now when I create drawings (D1, D2, D3) for each of these 3 assemblies, each BOM should show the respective number of Part A in the Quantity column. How do I do this?

If this part was just being used in one assembly, I would create a custom property 'Quantity' for the part and make a column in BOM that would show this quantity. But how can I solve the above situation?

Thanks to all the readers.

RE: Part custom properties and BOM

From my understanding you do not have to worry about the quantity of parts in each assembly. Solidworks already does this for you in their quantity column. Read SW help on inserting a BOM into the drawing. It should help explain things better.

RE: Part custom properties and BOM

Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly, but if you place part a "X" amount of times into A1, A2, & A3 the BOM will show to QTY for each of those. Why do you want to place that info into a custom property when the BOM is already reading the information.

FYI you can't hide the QTY column in the new SW BOM. So  adding your own Qty Column is kind of pointless.

RE: Part custom properties and BOM

mkmech,

It sounds like you are trying to attach QTY used as a characteristic of your part.  People generally do not do this for precisely the reason you are describing above.

The quantity of your part is a characteristic of the assembly that calls it up.  If there are several assemblies, each will have its own quantity, and you do not have a problem.
