square pipe
square pipe
(OP)
Hello!
I usually take care of the logistic part of an project. Now I have been asked to give an aproximatelly dimensions for a square pipe ( made it by welding four plates )which will be vertically mounted, and on it's lower part will act the following loading:
- an axial force ( weight),
- shear force
- a bending moment.
I have no problem on checinkg the (pipe) section, but I can't remember how could be calculated the welding.
Can you plase help me?
Thank you!

RE: square pipe
H=Say/I
S is the shear force at the cross section
a is the area of the overall section outside the section being considered i.e. the flange
y is the distance from the neutral axis to the centre of area a.
The result is in (metric units) kN/mm which can be equated to a weld size.
