Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

(OP)
Does anyone know what the allowable shear stress
(Fv) is for a 1920's rivet?  The oldest value I can find is 15ksi  in the 1966 AISC.

RE: Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

1926 American Bridge Company Engineering Standards gives a range of 9 to 15 ksi, for shear.

1914 Carnegie Steel Company Pocket Companion gives shear values of 12 ksi for shop rivets and 10 ksi for field rivets.

1932 Steel Mill Buildings by Milo S. Ketchum gives shear values of 13.5 ksi for shop rivets and 12 ksi for field rivets.

I will look it up in my prized possession of the first edition of the AISC manual. It is at the office. I will look it up on Monday.

RE: Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

Ketchum's Structural Engineers Handbook  (1924) specifies shear strength of 12 ksi for shop rivets and 9 ksi for field rivets.

RE: Allowable Shear Stress of a 1920's Rivet?

AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges lists 13.5 ksi for ASTM A502 Grade 1 rivets and 20 ksi for Grade 2.

The earliest AASHTO I could find in the office was the 1953 edition, it has 13.5 ksi.

THe "Handbook of Building Construction" by Hool and Johnson lists 12 ksi for shear; no distinction for shop or field driven.
