What country are you based in? Different countries have different requirements. What is your area of work? Different countries have different professional institutions / requirements.

If you are in the UK look up the Engineering Council web site for a list of institutions and their requirements for chartered status. In the US they have PE exams, which no doubt some of the others on the forum will advise about.
