RE: what is the mean of centerfugal casting

In simple terms, a long cylindrical mold is placed at and incline and then rotated.  Molten metal is pored into the mold and the metal in uniformly held to the walls by cenrifugal force.  You can produce cast to size tubes this way for use in furnaces and reactors.  It works well for alloys that are difficult to roll, form and weld, and also in cases where you don't need the tight tolerances of a wrought part.

RE: what is the mean of centerfugal casting

I worked for a company which centrifugally cast round fiber glass booms for aerial lift trucks and digger derricks. The process involve a mandrel with a finish honed ID which was laid on a rolling machine and spun to some RPM. The polyester gel coat was then pumped into the mandrel and spread evenly from end to end and hardened while spinning. The mandrel was stopped. Fiberglass cloth was then placed inside the mandrel wrapped around a plastic tube. The mandrel was spun up to speed and unrolls the glass cloth from the plastic tube and the tube was extracted. Catalyzed polyester resin was then pumped into the spinning mandrel wetting the cloth and allowed to harden. Multiple layers were required due to the exothermic reaction of the resin. Too much heat would crack the resin.

There is very little written about this proprietary process. The booms produced would be from 5" to 14" OD with up to 1.50" of wall thickness and 20 or more feet in length.

The last company I worked for centrifugally cast a Copper-Silver alloy by pouring the molten alloy into a spinning distributor thereby casting a ring of material.  This was the only way to get the microstructure and dispersion that was needed for the alloy.  Neat process.  If I remember correctly, they had to cast out 3000-pounds in less than 30-seconds in order to be successful with the casting.
