3 phase ski tuner set up

3 phase ski tuner set up

(OP)
Hello everyone....There's no category for Garage Mechanic here, so my question goes here.  I have a Wintersteiger ski tuner in my garage. It is Austrian made, with a large 3 phase motor. The motor runs a sanding belt one direction while a rubber feed wheel directs a ski over the sanding belt to flatten the ski base and sharpen the metal edges.  A separate water pump provides water, coolant and emulsion to the sanding belt. The numbers on the motor are 308 x 220v 50/60HZ. Getting the garage wired to 220 is no problem. Having the power company take care of the 3-phase is out of the question. I have seen converters advertised on the 'net for anywhere from $130 to $200. Do any of you recommend this and what has been your experience with them? If I haven't supplied enough information, please let me know via this site or be email.

RE: 3 phase ski tuner set up

You may likely get bumped by the Administrator of this forum because this is not for "garage mechanics", sorry. But in case you can see this before they delete you, visit www.practicalmachinist.com and log onto their Phase Converter and VFD forum. It is much more "tuned" (pun intended) to your needs because it is specifically for garage / home machinists, and many of the posters in there have good advice on converting 1 phase shops to run 3 phase machines.

RE: 3 phase ski tuner set up

How many HP is the motor? It might easier and just as cheap to install an equivalent single phase motor. By adding a 3ph converter you make the machine work alright but in the long run it may actually cost you more to operate. The 3ph converter produces power loss in the conversion (heat)which you pay for. Others may tell you that a single phase motor isn't as efficient as a 3ph motor so you have the added cost anyway. I totally agree. But adding a 3ph converter to me is just one more component that can break down.
Just a thought.
