direct logic 405 questions

(OP)
HELLO, We just bought a second hand machinery designed to manufacture plastic pouches. The whole machine process is controlled by a Koyo/TI direct logic 405 PLC. Thsi machine have been stored for more than one year and was not connected to power supply. We would like now to take out the DL software running our machine in order to have a back up in trouble case and also to bring some improvements to the programmation. Questions 1. are we unlucky and due to the fact the machine had no power supply all the infos might have disapeared ? 2. if not, what do we have to buy to do this job ? 3. we dispose of an experienced programmer (C, Java and so on) how long would it take him to make a back up of the programm in a first step. Thank you vm for your help. Best regards from Switzerland.

RE: direct logic 405 questions

Direct Logic PLCs use Ladder Logic through a software programming package called Directsoft32.  You will also require a programming cable.  I am not sure as to the answer to your memory storage over time question...Try this site for basic product support, purchasing, and FAQ.

RE: direct logic 405 questions

Basically the 405 series came in three CPUs
DL 430  (has no memory cartridge)
DL440 should have any one of the following: EE, UV or CMOS cartridge, Only the CMOS has battery that maintain the ladder.
DL450 has internal memory and/may or may not have memory cartridge as in 440
The UV and the EE  would not affect by storage, The CMOS need to replace the battery each few years.

Your first step is to define your CPU model,
Then open the CPU cover (where the power wires go) and see if there is memory cartridge read the part number. You can refer to Automationdirect web site for discription of memory.
Your next step is to have the programming software or the handheld programmer.
With the software you can make a backup copy to the PC, the handheld you can copy the ladder to a second memory cartridge. Of course you need the programming cable that you can buy or built your self.
Your only problem would be if the machine builder had used a password to protect the software. Then  you need to get this password from the machine builder.
If you need further help just ask.
Good luck

Many thanks to you controlnut and Agomaa, we are now going to buy the software to connect the PLC to a computer and will let you know about the results. Our CPU is a 440 with a cmos ram.
Best regards. Guy
