Working on Beta assyÆs of released assyÆs Using PDM

(OP)
Our Engineering group is using PDM/Works 2005, production can see this vault. We have 4 Engineers working on a released version by changing it to non-approved drawings. They cannot put these drawing back into the Vault, because production could build to the wrong revision & they have. The problem is the engineers want to keep some sort of history of Beta tests or we could work outside the PDM using the new method SolidWorks 2005 has for working together.
Question: What do other Engineering departments do to work on Beta tests with two or more Engineers working together on released drawings?

Bradley
