qench tank design
qench tank design
(OP)
I need to evaluate quench tanks for cooling cast aluminum parts from 500F to 160F in a given cycle time (38 seconds)I need to know what input water temp and flow rate would be required to meet that cylce time. I really need a quick rule of thumb kind of method because I'm frequently asked by customers to confirm a tank design as part of a automation project proposal

RE: qench tank design
In reality it is a lot more complicated. You need to make sure that the tank is uniform, and you do need some excess capacity. You also need to make sure that your external water cooling loop can handle the heat load.
The other question, will the casting cool in the desired time, is a tougher one. If the castings are complex this will need to done empirically.
