protective coating for steel pipe

(OP)
what is the suitable protective coating for external steel pipe with 95 celcius degree service temperature?

where i can find list of organic coating properties (ex. temperature resistance value of each coating material)?

thx for your advice

RE: protective coating for steel pipe

The general starting point would be the either the paint manufacturer's recommendation or by you searching the paint datasheets on their websites for performance information:

http://www.international-pc.com/pc/

for example.

Experience has dictated that, in general, the manufacturer's data really needs to be verified by appropriate performance testing which will take us down a different thread.

If you are insulating the pipe, review NACE RP 0198 to get guidance on the paint systems to be used.  You can also get guidance from the eight parts of ISO 12944.

For your information, our company has tested and qualified the following system for atmospheric exposure in an arid environment:

1. Polyamide epoxy primer  50 microns
2. Polyamide epoxy hi build intermediate   100 microns
3  Aliphatic polyurethane topcoat  50 microns

Total DFT:  200 microns.

Thermal spray aluminium could also be an option for you.

Take a look at NORSOK M-501

Good luck

xda, you can find information on a modified novolac epoxy coating that will satisfy your performance requirements for an external high temperature coating at: http://www.4pipelines.com.

Open the Coatings file and look for the KEMA 300PA epoxy data sheet.

This company produces a great product that will give you the results you are looking for.

RE: protective coating for steel pipe

what about the following system :-

   surface prepartion of SA2.5
1-Inorganic zinc silicate primer 50 micron
2-Tie Coat polyamid epoxy 50 micron
3- Top Coat 50 micron ( Depend on the required Weather/External environment)

The Two coats 2 & 3 can be replaced with a surface tolerant coating such as Amerlock 400.

Yuo have to be also carful about the application of the coating at that high temperature. You need to have a flexible system that can be applied at a surface. Most epoxies at this tempurature will dry very fast.

Yuo can also check Amercoat 878 HS

http://www.ameron-bv.com/products/product_data/pdf3.php?lang=ENGL&code=878hs&free=&ordner=p

Also consider PSX 700

RE: protective coating for steel pipe

XDa you must advise us whether or not the coating application will be done to a live line operating at 95C or not.

If done to a live line at 95C then the reactive resins contained within their (vankami & SJones) recommended formulations will very quickly breakdown and create severe pinholing and potential charring of the wet film causing it to be unusable.

If however the application is to be done to a shut-in line then either one of the three recommended coating systems may be appropriate.

The novolac- based epoxy coating, being 100% solid in nature, is the only one that can offer a one coat application.

RE: protective coating for steel pipe

On our site, we use several different systems which are similar Vonkami's system for non insulated steel to 100C.

All have an IOZ primer, with some kind of tie coat, finished off with some kind of tough topcoat like a polyurethane.

If there's no industrial chemical splash/fume contamination, a two coat system would suffice.

By the way, thermally sprayed aluminium for coating new insulated lines is now becoming best practice to avoid CUI.

Cheers

RE: protective coating for steel pipe

What is a good paint system (MPI Paint System number) for exterior steel pipe handrails and railings?  ASTM A 53/A 53M, Grade B Schedule 40, black finish pipe is to be primed and painted in the field.

Thank you
