3 digit IP ratings

3 digit IP ratings

(OP)
Concerning 3 digit IP ratings:  There seems to be some ambiguity as to the standards for the 3rd digit, which refers to mechanical impact survivability.

When trying to figure out an IP65-7 rating, the -7 rating is listed as meaning able to survive 6.0 joules of impact (1.5 Kg @ 40cm), at www.accesscomms.com.au/IP.htm

However, www.engineeringtoolbox.com/32_452.html does not show a -7 rating, but lists the 6.0 joule impact survival rating as -5.  7 is not listed; largest rating is 6 (20.0 joules).

Which is right?

RE: 3 digit IP ratings

The IEC enclosure ratings (IP) have 3 parts XY Z
X= Protection against solid objects
Y= Protection against liquids
Z= Protection against mechanical impacts

Z
5= 2 joules  (0.5kg from 400mm)
7= 6 joules  (1.5kg from 400mm)
9= 20 joules (5.0kg from 400mm)

Frequently enclosures omit the third digit (Z).

Trust this helps.
