DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

(OP)
I was wondering if there is a quick and painless way to add another SLC 4 slot rack that's running a 5/02 CPU to my existing SLC 4 slot rack running a 5/03...

The existing 5/03 talks VB script running on a PC via the serial port. I have an 2 8 input triac cards and a 8 output triac card in this system.

Recently, I have acquired another rack with a 5/02 CPU, 2 16 DI, and a 16 DO card. I'd like to integrate the two systems.

I did visit AB's homepage. Their DH-485 overview states that a network interface adapter would be needed.

Finally my question is: Can I connect the two CPUs using the DH-485 ports and configure the programs accordingly?
Any insight and reference is greatly appreciated!!

RE: DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

How about using an interconnect cable between the racks. You will not need a second CPU. I have two 13 slot racks tied together this way. Up to 3 racks can be tied together.

I will look into this option.
I figured that since I had the two racks with CPU cards, I'd try to integrate the two, if it were as easy is plugging in a patch cable to both DH485 ports and changing some code in my programs...

Thanks for the tip!

RE: DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

If your rack are within 3ft of each other (same cabinet in other words)  Then the chassis interconnect cable it the way to go.  From a programming standpoint it appears to be one local rack.

You might do some homework on DH-485 networks.  The only time I have used it is with a SLC 5/03.  I used DH 485 to communicate to a TCP flatpanel.  I am sure AB mades a cable, or give pinoust so you can make your own.  You would then need to write some message instructions to handle interlocks between the 2 processors.

RE: DH-485 Comms between AB 5/02 and 5/03

To connect the racks together with a processor in each rack, you will need to set up a DH485 network.  A (1747-AIC or 1747-NET-AIC) Isolated Link Coupler is needed at each processor or node. They are connected together with twisted pair.  AB sets the distance at 4000ft and a max baud rate 19.2K.
