Could I rename a slender column like wall to avoid seismic limits of ACI Code? Could I have big wide beams framed with slender "walls"? Wath about reinforcement development and about joints in this kind of structure?

RE: members proportions

I don't have seismic experience outside of school, but renaming things to avoid code restrictions seems irresponsible at best.  Code restrictions are there for a reason, particularly in seismic areas.  The code provides definitions for its terms also, so just renaming it at best makes it seem like you're hiding something.  A rose is a rose afterall.

Maybe there's some provision that states if you do some ultra Mojo analysis you can do what you want.

I think ACI 352 covers beam-column joints.

RE: members proportions

In general, the law requires that you apply good engineering judgement.  In fact, just adhearing to a specification blindly is unacceptable.  If common practice for a specific application is to do more than the specifications require...  you are legally obligated to provide the common practice as a minimum.  Merely meeting the code will not get you off the hot seat if there is ever a problem.
