Laptop

I have just rec. a new laptop(HP pavilion zv5340us).It has a AMD Athlon processor, 2.2GHz, 512MB RAM, 100GB. The video card is a GeForce4 440 64MB. The Operating System is Microsoft Windows XP Home service pack 2.

What are my chances that this will run SolidWorks 2005 for moderate use.

Jim

RE: Laptop

The graphics card will be the biggest issue.

RE: Laptop

It depends what you consider to be "moderate".  As rockguy states, your video card is the big problem as it is not approved for use with SW.  I have heard of a mod to turn a GeForce into a Quadro, but sounds risky to do in a laptop.

I had a similar laptop for a few months, but returned it, only because I didn't see a real need for a desktop replacement laytop (I don't travel enough).

I was able to open and manipulate 600-part assemblies.  I was able to model (but didn't like the reduced screen resolution) parts, and work on small 10-part in-context assemblies. eDrawings worked "ok".

Sometimes I did notice slight repaint issues while in drawings, and rotation can get a bit hesitant.  While not listed for this card, Real View worked nicely.

I hope this helps.

Light use may be a better term. Assemblies are no larger than 100 parts and a large part might be about 20 meg.

I will just have to give it a try.

Thanks
Jim

RE: Laptop

I have a Dell M-60 laptop that I have just replaced my desktop unit with.  It gets used everyday just as hard as my desktop and it works great!  It's a dell m-60 1.5mhz Pentium M processor with a gig of ram and an nvidea go700 graphics card.  It replaced a Dell 670 worstation with a pentium 4 2.4mhz processor with 1 gig of ram and an nvideia fx 500 graphics card.  I would highly reccomend this unit to anyone using a laptop for CAD work.

RE: Laptop

It won't matter because that video card is not supported. Since it's not suport you will see multiple graphics issues. Like dimensions disappearing, etc... Get a laptop that has a supported video card. SW list some laptops at their site with support graphics cards.
