Hanger

Hanger

(OP)
Why is the building that aircraft are kept in called a hanger?

RE: Hanger

2
The word hangar (with an 'a'), probably comes from the latin word 'angarium' which means is a 'shed by the house', usually used for covered storage.

RE: Hanger

Drunks hang out in bars, aircraft hang out in hangers. Seems logical to me.

RE: Hanger

I found this in a dictionary.
Hangar Fr ulterior origin uncertain
a.hõgar – A covered space, shed, or shelter, esp. for carriages.
It then lists an example from 1852.
b.haerje (n) A shop for the accommodation of aircraft or spacecraft.
A more modern defn.

There are a lot of words in aviation that were named by the French, especially in the start of the industry. I seems that Hangar was one.

RE: Hanger

If one Googles around looking for hangar's etymology one may find a variety of possible origins for the word.
