I am trying to quote a machine that has been designed in Solid works. They have sent me the E drawings models of the machine instead of the solid works models and or drawings so i have to pick the whole machine apart and measure it manually using edrawings.
Has anyone else experienced E Drawings 2005 crash when you go to maximize the Edrawing? it just freezes. it keeps happening on my laptop.
Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop. Intel 1.5ghz , 512mb of ram, etc etc. win xp sp2. edrawings 2005 pro. Any suggestions?

Its an onboard card.
Theophilus (Mechanical)
I would guess it's your graphics card. I had problems with a Sony Vaio running SolidWorks with more than one part at a time--big problems with any assembly and it had the same card or perhaps the 9500. So I would imagine this would apply to 3D displays of multiple parts in eDrawings also.
SBaugh (Mechanical)
That's your problem right there. That card is not support.

By the sound of it, you should request better files, too.

RE: EDRawings 2005
Try turning your hardware Acceleration down to "None".
RMB your Desktop\Properties\Settings (Tab)\Advanced\Troubleshoot (Tab) - Pull the slider down to "None"
See if that helps, if not then there isn't much you can do because you are using an unsupported card.

Thanks fer ur suggestions. Ill try the acceleration slider. It might jsut work. although the files work on other peoples laptops with the same card. but who knows.
Theophilus (Mechanical)
Especially since this happens when you maximize your window, we can be almost certain the graphics card is the glitch. Good luck with Scott's suggestions. I tried many things with the Sony to no avail.

RE: EDRawings 2005
You are right to say Good luck, because my suggestion that I suggested is the only thing left to do next to replacing the machine (since it's a laptop). i don't think what I suggested above will fix his issue, but it'sworth a try to get him through.
FYI - I updated this FAQ - FAQ559-1058 to help with issues like this in the future.

Seems to have worked like a charm :)
Thanks for everyone with helpful suggestions (except the guy who replied "MORE RAM MAYBE?" Very useless reply. hahah lol.
Thanks again
Derek.

RE: EDRawings 2005
Video card is priority, then RAM.
I didn't see it as useless, didn't have time then to be more thorough. Thanks Scott for filling in the rest.
RE: EDRawings 2005
No Problem! I needed to feel useful for a change here!
Been to busy at work with issues, to able to keep up out here lately. By the time I get here I have been brain dead.
I am in agreement with you though, 512MB is low for 05. I don't recommend anything under 1 gig and that has been since SW04.

RAM is still cheap and you can get a good CAD video card for around $225.

The problem is new comps for everyone are expensive, BUT I have just been informed we are getting all new systems in the new year :) YAY
Thanks again

I have one of these cards. If you get new systems you need to find out if they are PCI express motherboards or not because if that's the case you need to get one of the FX series PCI Express video Cards.

Does E-Drawings require a "proffessional CAD" video card?
dcmoore (Mechanical)
(OP)
excellent point, this laptop i am using isnt a cad machine, its just used for ms office and autocad. The premise of edrawings is what the above stated.
Arlin (Mechanical)
To eliminate the crashes caused by your video card, you can do the following:
SBaugh (Mechanical)
The Use "Software OpenGL" option is just the same as the "Hardware Acceleration", except the "HA" does does alittle more to the graphics, then the Software OpenGL does.

RE: EDRawings 2005
I thought the whole premise of e-drawings was to enable a 3d model to be viewed by anyone on (almost) any computer.
I am aware that SWX requires a proffessional CAD level video card such as a Quadro or FireGL, but I was not aware of this restriction regarding e-drawings.
If this is indeed the case, it looks like a major disadvantage for edrawings.
RE: EDRawings 2005
ALso I hate edrawings because it is such a pig, it is at least 2x slower then the same model in solid works. very frustrating with large models
RE: EDRawings 2005
Open up edrawings without anything loaded (just the application)
Go to Tools>Options>General
Check the "Use software OpenGL" checkbox.
This will reduce performance, but eliminate the crashes caused by your video card.
Yes, graphics performance is certainly lacking in e-drawings.
Also, the rotate tool just plain acts weird.
