Want to copy custom hole wizard database between computers

Want to copy custom hole wizard database between computers

Want to copy custom hole wizard database between computers

(OP)
Hello,

Our company uses different diameters, depths, etc. for our clearance holes, counterbore holes, tapped holes, etc. than the ANSI standards use.  One of our engineers has used Tools -> Options -> Data Options -> Edit Standards Data to create two new derived standards, 'OurCo Inch' and 'OurCo Metric', which were derived from ANSI Inch and ANSI Metric.  So far, so good...

Now, we (all the lazy SW users ) want to take advantage of his hard work and copy his 'OurCo Inch' and 'OurCo Metric' data to each of our installations of SolidWorks so we can use them too (without each typing all the infomation in by hand).

This is what we've tried in the way of figuring out what needs to be copied over:

1. On the computer with our custom hole wizard data, we made a change to the data that he had input and then searched the C:\Program Files\SolidWorks directory for any files that had changed today.  Only one file was found: C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\data\Default.mdb.  We tried copying that file to another computer, but when we used the hole wizard on the new computer, we got an error:

"The derived standard 'OurCo Inch' does not exist in the database.  Using the parent of this standard instead."

2. We used the copy options wizard to create a registry file from the computer with the customized hole wizard data and installed the registry info into the other computer.  This didn't work either, and we got the same error.

Does anyone know how can we copy these derived/custom hole standards from one computer to several others?

Thanks,
Ken Bolen

RE: Want to copy custom hole wizard database between computers

I assume you have Toolbox?

If so, why isn't your TB on a network drive?

If it was then the Standard that was created would exist on the server.

Under your TB location under browser you should see a listing of all the databases those that are locked and those that you customized and made. From there I believe  you can copy the DB and the swbrowser.mdb file to your system.

But you should really have this info and the TB moved to the server. See SW TB guide on how to do a multi-user server install.

We do not use toolbox. In fact we don't even insert fasteners unless they're special or there's a chance of an interference.

We just like to use our own custom sized holes, and want a common database among all users w/o having to type it in 20'ish times...and maintain changes in 20'ish places.

Thanks,
Ken

Toolbox and the Hole Wizard share the same database. Copy the database file (Under "Program Files/Common Files/ Solidworks shared" I think) to your network and update the toolbox ini file located in the Solidworks install folder for each user.

We have a solution:

Basically, in order to copy custom hole wizard databases from one machine to another you need to copy this file:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Solidworks Data\lang\English\SWBrowser.mdb

Note that we are not using toolbox.  Also, the location of the commonfiles directory could be different on your machine.

Thanks for your input,
Ken
