Mirror

(OP)
When I mirror my object I end up with two, the original and the mirrored one.  How can I get rid of the original and keep the mirred one?

RE: Mirror

You can't because the mirrored feature is the child and the original is now the parent.

The only thing you might be able to do is to create a Cut-Extrude through the parent feature.

"Insert --> Feature --> Delete bodies"

This removes bodies.  "Delete bodies" is a feature, so it doesn't actually remove the features that built the original body.  Your mirrored body will retain associativity to the "deleted" original body.

"Delete bodies" is also useful for cleaning up construction geometry.  I use it to get rid of surface bodies used to derive certain features once the part is complete.  That way, extra bodies don't get exported by accident.  Also helps to reduce file size by eliminating banked parasolid data.

TheTick:

I am going to show my lack of experience with Solidworks here, but I attempted to follow your advice and I am clearly doing something wrong.  For grins I created a 3" x 3" x 1/2" slab just to play with.  Then I opened a sketch on one flat face, created a sketch for a dowel-like structure, mirrored this sketch and then extruded.  I now had two dowels on the surface.  However, any time I try to use Insert>Features>Delete Bodies to attempt to delete the original dowel only, it considers my whole entity as one body, even though my dowels were Extrude2.  (Extrude1 being the orginal 1/2 thickness).  Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

RE: Mirror

When you create the original dowel, make sure you deselect the {b}Merge result[/b] switch in the Direction1 dialogue box. This will then creaate the seperate body which can then be deleted.

RE: Mirror

Sometimes I hate trying to keep up with all the new features... I need a vacation.... BAD!!

Good catch there TheTick. Multi-bodies crossed my mind, but it didn't stick...

Worked like a charm!  I had forgotten the effects of the Merge Results check mark.  Many thanks!
