open stator windings HONDA 5D

(OP)
I am looking or answers for a customer.
The situation is a 5000 watt honda generator that devolped a open in the stator windings, The question is what caused this.
The generator is used as a suppliment to a off the grid location, where solar & inverters are the main AC power.
I have looked at the load & generators location so do not believe that overheating or overloads are the problem.
I have been curious about running a generator with very lite loads on it for extended perioids though. I have heard that this is could be hard on the gen. but  assumed that it was a tale without any body, but am now wondering if in fact it could cause excessive heat in the windings, enough to cause a open?
Any thoughts would be great
Thanks Bob
