New opening in existing CMU wall

New opening in existing CMU wall

New opening in existing CMU wall

(OP)
I need to cut an opening for a 2’-6” wide x 4’ high window in an existing 8” CMU wall.  The wall is 20' high and supports a roof and 2nd floor at 12' above grade.  the wall is not grouted solid and location and size of reinforcing is unknown.  I would appreciate any suggestions regarding design procedure and details.

RE: New opening in existing CMU wall

There have been a lot of posts about this recently.  Maybe if you look for those first you'll find the answer you need.  It might be faster for you.

RE: New opening in existing CMU wall

Create a new lintel beam using steel angles.
First you saw cut the length of the opening plus 4" on each side of the opening (before you saw cut the entire opening).  Then you install your steel on both sides and thru-bolt it.  And finally you can saw cut the opening.  You can use steel shannels for the sides of the opening.
