Hi all,

I have an application where pin joints are required.  It is a marine environment so T316 bar is the ideal material for the pin.

For a minimum yield strength of 220 MPa I need an annealed stainless, would the aforementioned T316N be readily machineable?

Any comments would be greatly welcomed,

It is no easier to machine than any other austenitic stainless.  It is very soft and gummy.

This may not be a good application for 316 SS.  If this part is to be used under stress and exposed to chlorides the risks of crevice corrosion and even stress corrosion cracking should not be ignored.
Do you need higher strength?  A duplex stainless grade may be a better option for you.  One of the lean duplexes (19D, 2003, 2101, 2304) might be worth looking at.

Hi Ed, thanks for the info.

Its been a while since I have looked at all things stainless so please bear with me .

The pins we are using are up to 100mm Diameter, and I do need the higher strength. As mentioned minimum yield in the order of 220MPa is required, adding a design factor I would be better off with minimum yield of 300MPa.

Thise duplex grades you mentioned, are they AISI numbers?  I am trying to find more info on them.
