if this is within your realm of possibilities, try to gget some material testing done. There are several good testing labs out there these days for high strain rate testing of metals (as well as low strain rate, of course), just do a google search and some labs will surely show up (like http://www.axelproducts.com/pages/HighStrainRate.html).
