Signal pole design

Signal pole design

(OP)
I'm a new designer to the industry with a general understandin g of statics and Strength of materials (trig based) I am looking for a mentor some one to walk me through a simple design say camera pole 40' high 8 sided with a 1.5" thk X 19.5" sq. base plate 1/4" astm a572 pole astm a36 base welded wtih an upper fillet of 5/16" and lower of 1/4"  I've done beam deflection for standard I beam type structure  but i'm having a harder time with a hollow tapering prismoid (.14 taper.) Is there someone out there willing to help me out here?

RE: Signal pole design

First of all, I think this is the wrong place for mentoring. Mentoring requires constant and full time and constant feedback.

I sounds to me that you are looking for someone to show you how to solve and or design a pole structure. There are many factors involved in the design. It is not simple for the first timer.

I will be nice and give you this link for a step by step design example for single tapering pole. Read it and try to understand it and read the referenced codes. Buy hem if you do not have them. Also invest in some books and attend seminars. There are many of them and they are administered all over the country.

Here is the link:   http://www.c-conceptsinc.com/files/example2.pdf

Let me caution you that the design of the pole is the easy task. The hard task is to design the base plate connection and the foundation.

Good luck

Looks like this is the basic concept I've been dealing with thanks for the staring point.  I apprecaite the input I full well intend and am reading what I can on the subject... also if you know of a seminar in the western side of the US that would be discussing this topic lplease let me know... I geuss I could spend sometime with my local DOT and pick their brains...thanks again...

RE: Signal pole design

Get a copy of the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals, especially if you anticipate doing a lot of this work in the future.

It has loads, design criteria, etc. as well as deflection formulae for tapered poles for a variety of load cases.

RE: Signal pole design

here's a good book I use from time to time:

"Engineering Sign Structures" by Benjamin Jones. His examples are well-presented.

I don't do much sign structure/light pole design but I agree with Lufti, the hardest part is the base plate connection and foundation.

Thanks I am waiting  for my copy of the AAHSTO and I will look into the book.
