I need to determine the optimum thickness, hardness, and %compression for a neoprene gasket required to seal the perimeter of a casting. The casting must be gasketed such that it can withstand an external water jet pressure of 200 psi.

What are the calculation procedures to solve this type of problem?

basically your clamping pressure has to be greater than the pressure you are trying to withstand. For this you will need general material proprties and understand your geometry. Normally I use 25-35% comprerssion for most rubber type seals as a nominal value.

1. Pick a material
2. Assume a compression value
3. From that compression use the material properties (compression curves, etc) to derive a clamping pressure. Compare this to your design criteria.
