Workable steel resistant to Silica abrasion

Workable steel resistant to Silica abrasion

(OP)
Hi,

I have stainless steel spiral railings where silica regularly brushes against(single piece vibrating bowl about 15 inches in diameter). These are most probably AISI 430. Though readily available, they wear up pretty fast. I need another material, but most tool steels cannot be made into railings economically. The replacement material should come in sheet form, can be formed into a spiral rail and still be wear and impact resistant. I'm at a loss as to what to select. Pls. help.

RE: Workable steel resistant to Silica abrasion

I would consider one of the abrasion resistant grades of steel - AR 400, HARDOX 400, etc. These are available in sheet or plate products and are formable.

You can try High Manganese steel plates .

Try to find a piece of 2205 duplex stainless strip.  It will cost a bit more, but it is tough, strong and will work harden under wear conditions.

Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be managed.
