Truss girder with top wood nailer?

Truss girder with top wood nailer?

Truss girder with top wood nailer?

(OP)
I want to use truss girders, spanning 40ft to support at midpoint 65 ft roof wood truss @ 2'0. o.c. (5/12 pitch).

I have never seen steel truss girders used before, but I have used steel beams with top wood nailer.

1. Does any body know if top wood nailer can be done for roof support?

2. Also, can any body tell be why truss girders or truss joist can/can't be used at the edge of roof or floors? (instead of regular steel beams?)

Thanks for any input.

Stephan

RE: Truss girder with top wood nailer?

stephnito,

Our structural firm normally requires pre-fabricated wood trusses to be designed by the fabricator and stamped by a PE. However, I will typically speak to the fabricator to ensuere that adequate support is being provided also that the spans are attainable for the trusses.  Maybe the fabricator can offer you some insight.

RE: Truss girder with top wood nailer?

Stephanito, what building code are you using? IBC2000? Let me see if I can answer your second question. At the perimeter of the floor joists (using TJI's) cont. blocking is usually required. Using Truss Joists (which is a company by the way) solid blocking comes with the floor trusses but you have to spec it. This also can act as fire blocking if required by code. The blocking also provides stiffness to the edge of the flooring.
Your first question I am not clear on, if you can expand i'll be glad to take a try on it.
Thanks,
