Strength of Laser Weld

Strength of Laser Weld

(OP)
Hi,
I would like to know if there is any documentation on the strength of laser weld. Is it about 80% of the material strength?

Regards.

RE: Strength of Laser Weld

Yes, there is enormous documentation in technical journals.  You can perform a search at:

http://www.scirus.com

The strength varies so greatly with starting material and process parameters that stating a single value like 80% is inappropriate.

Cory

If I'm using SS 17-4PH, what is a comfortable figure I can start with?

Regards.

RE: Strength of Laser Weld

What heat treatment does the starting material have?  Do you perform any post-welding heat treatment?  Unlike a simple low carbon steel, your material is quite complex, which means there is no comfortable figure without a complete description of the material condition and process parameters.

Cory

Hi Cory,
  Thanks for the reply.
There will be a heat treatment process to H1075 before the laser welding process. There will not be any post-weld heat treatment.

Thanks & Regards.
