Shear Stress

Shear Stress

Shear Stress

(OP)
Hello

As a electrical and control systems engineer Im'e having dificulty with a drive shaft.  What is the permissable stress allowed if the material used is 275 structual steel.

RE: Shear Stress

Allowable shear stress for steel is given in the AISC manual for steel design. The permissable shear stress will depend on your design method, either LRFD, or ASD.

Be sure to add the torsional shear stress to any other horizonal or vertical shear forces applied to the shaft.

RE: Shear Stress

If it's a drive shaft, that puts it more in the ME realm rather than the structural.  If I'm not mistaken, you'd need to take fatique into account also.

RE: Shear Stress

Eleccola:  What kind of problems are you having?
