Is there a way of locking/protecting a part/assembly so people can't edit them?

Assuming you don't have a PDM system, yI think the only way is to set the Windows file permission to Read only.

That's what I do CBL and AirRider04.

Since files are not open for write access, different users can share the same standard parts/assemblies for their work.

The referred useful article is valid for SW2005. For those still working with SW2004 (like me), proceed as fig.2 and set the Windows file permission to Read only.
