Painfully Easy BOM Question
Painfully Easy BOM Question
(OP)
When designing weldments in SW 2005, I tend to not use the Weldment functionality. I just make an assembly of steel shapes. I am in the process of making a weldment BOM template and I am wondering if I can link a column to the base extrusion length value for a part for the cut length? Is this possible? OR, is the Weldment functionality really the better way to do this?
Thanks,
Matt

RE: Painfully Easy BOM Question
To put a dimension in a custom property:
- Open the custom property editor
- Select or create a custom property to edit (either general or configuration specific)
- Double-click the feature of interest to show its dimensions
- Double-click the dimension
You may want to rename any dimensions and features you use for the sake of clarity.BTW this is how I create notes for single-line slot and chamfer dimensions.

RE: Painfully Easy BOM Question
We do this. You can make a note in a drawing reference a custom property in a part or assembly. 90% of our title blocks are populated this way. When editing the text of a note in a drawing, there is a button in the property manager that is for inserting custom properties. In a drawing, one has the option of choosing whether to use properties from the drawing, the model in the reference view, or the model the note's leader is attached to.
So, yes, you can populate a drawing's notes with a part's properties. However, I do not know of a way to automatically reference a subassembly's part's parent assembly in a custom property. Such a custom property still needs to be manually edited.
