We are currently analyzing a ground-supported water tank that was designed and manufactured by Pittsburgh-Des Moines in 1959.  It is our intention to perform an analysis of this structure using the AWWA D100 standard that was current at that time.  Does anyone know the year of that standard and where I can purchase a copy of it?  If so, I would greatly appreciate it!

RE: AWWA D100

I think you will find very few changes between an 1959 AWWA tank and one built to the basic standard of today (ie, S = 15000psi, E =0.85).  Have you tried www.awwa.org yet?

Yeah, sure did - most of the stuff they have on their site is regarding the new standard.  I was going to call or email them, but they tend to take quite a while, and wanted to go with an equally reliable resource, which landed me here.

I had a feeling that quite a bit hasn't changed in those years - the current D100-96 seems rather simplistic, except for the seismic and Chapter 14 info, which seems to modernize the standard.  I was mainly looking for the material class of the steel used.  Knowing A36 steel wasn't available in 1959, do you think the steel would have Fy>34 ksi, and therefore be classified as Class 2?

RE: AWWA D100

Seems like 1959 was the year a new version came out, so you still wouldn't know whether it was built under the 1959 or the one just older.

By the way, simple is good, don' knock it.  Current ASCE 7 is a real mess.

RE: AWWA D100

A36 was around in 1959, but I would expect that the tank was built of A283-Grade C or A7.  Those were the materials of choice in 1959.  The sorting of materials by CLASS was not around in 1959.  Chapter 14 is the old Appx C that did not originate until the mid to late 1960s.  Hope this helps.
