Snap ring groove stress

Snap ring groove stress

Snap ring groove stress

(OP)
Hi,

One of the designs I am reviewing involves an external spline with a machined groove cut circumferentially for a snap ring. The snap ring sees a uniform load normal to its face (parallel to the spline direction), and the load is fed into relatively short spline lugs. I am trying to calculate the maximum tensile stress at the corner of the machined groove (as a function of the fillet radius). I found a formula to calculate tensile stress at the corner of a short gear tooth in Roark's text. Can I adapt this formula to a protrusion with straight faces, to simulate this spline loading? I should probably do an FEA but I am trying to cut down on the ABAQUS work if I can get a good conservative estimate. Thanks!!!!
