section views in assemblies

section views in assemblies

section views in assemblies

(OP)
We have a large number of assemblies that we have saved as parts so that we can use them in other assemblies without having to load the whole thing over a network.

This works well untill I create a section view in the assembly. Suddenly no elements of the assembly saved as a part are selectable. Switch off the section and its all ok again. re-section the view and the part becomes stupid again.

Can someone help.

RE: section views in assemblies

You saved the assy as a dumb part. If you need to edit parts, you need to leave it as an assy. Just curious, why do you save your assy's as parts?

RE: section views in assemblies

(OP)
No. I specifically do not want to edit the assembly.

All I need from this historical and unchangeable assembly is the ability to measure both it and its position to other things in the assembly.

We save it as a part so that may users can have a copy of the assembly on their local machine without killing the network with un-necessary traffic.

RE: section views in assemblies

What version are you using? SP?

RE: section views in assemblies

When you save the assembly as a part, are you selecting exterior faces, exterior components, all components?  I would assume you are selecting the "all components", this is my thought too.  You should investigate whether the newly created part consists of multiple bodies.  If it does, the section views should turn out okay.  If it doesn't, the section view will not distinguish between all the sub components.  It will just look like a section of a large lump of mass.

Maybe you should create the drawing once, based on the real assembly, and save it as pdf.

This way you'll have a dumb part and a dumb drawing available to all users, without stressing the network.

I think I may be confusing people.
The problem I have with assemblies saved as parts is not in the drawing environment but in the assembly enviroment.

As soon as I section a view, the part becomes dumb.

RE: section views in assemblies

When you save the assembly as a part what option did you pick?

External faces
External components
All Components

This may help determine the problem.

However when you save your assembly as a part it is already a dumb model, because the features are wiped out and replaced with either surfaces or bodies (depending on the option you picked above.
