Best Aluminium for mould, Temp 130C

Best Aluminium for mould, Temp 130C

The company i work for are trying to make a mould to make a carbon fibre component. In order to cure the Material we need to take the mould up to 130C-140C.

We would like to make the mould out of aluminium as its easy to machine, compared to steel etc.

I am a little worried that at these temperatures the material may become dimensionally unstable, how can we prevent the mould from expanding and contracting as much? Get the mould heat treated and then perform a final pass with the cnc machine?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Is Alcoa MIG-6 Anygood?

RE: Best Aluminium for mould, Temp 130C

The product name is MIC-6 not MIG-6, and it may be suitable for your application.  Since MIC-6 is a cast plate, not rolled, it will not have the distortion issues typical of wrought Al plate.  So, you should only have to take into account the coefficient of thermal expansion at 130-140 C, not any dimension changes due to a change in residual stresses, etc.

why you not try some alloys Al-Si-Mg , they are very stable in your temperature interval &the final passing with cnc is very good also, y think, with regards on designing of mold in accordance with dilatation and contraction on these alloys.
