settlement in sandy soil

settlement in sandy soil

(OP)
I'm involved in a project in Northeast Florida where it is proposed to design a detention pond with the normal water surface about 2 feet below the water table. It will have a weir at the design normal water level and it is intended to drain all of the water table above the design normal water level to a river. My question is, with the sandy soil will this cause subsidence in the surrounding land and how fast would the ground water velocity need to be to transport fine sands into the pond?

RE: settlement in sandy soil

cimmeron,

From the sounds of it, your pond is a cut in the native soil.  It seems as though if you have a drain to a nearby river, the surrounding land won't experience water levels higher than normal, and settlement as a cause of pond construction shouldn't be an issue.

What is your weir made of, out of curiosity?
