18-8 stainless steel designation
18-8 stainless steel designation
(OP)
Can someone help settle an argument? I work with a guy who swears that specifying "18-8 Stainless Steel" is sufficient to control the alloys used in fastener manufacture and to insure alloys with yield points of 30ksi and higher. My argument is that "18-8" is such a broad designation that it will allow alloys with lower yield points and really doesn't "nail it down" well enough. I maintain that you need to state the alloy (e.g. 304 SST) and governing specification. How about it?

If you are going to buy to specs follow a couple of simple rules.
Buy copies of each one.
Read them, know the differences (is testing required? size tolerance? documentation requirements?)
If you want to use ASTM then JOIN. You don't have to attend meetings, just vote electronicly. You can abstaine on everything, but you will know what specs are being changed. You also get a free volume with your membership. This costs less than just buying the book.
