PDMWorks vault folders

PDMWorks vault folders

PDMWorks vault folders

(OP)
For the purposes of simplifying our backups I am trying to get all files that need to be backed up in one folder.  Currently our vault resides in C:\VaultData, while other files that need to be backed up are in separate folders, all under C:.

Is it possible to move our existing vault to another folder?  For example, can I move VaultData from C: to C:\BackupFiles?

It's been a while since I installed our vault, but one thought I had would be to back up the vault, delete it, and reinstall a new vault to C:\BackupFiles\VaultData.  I would then restore our data to this new path.  Does this sound viable, although a bit painful?

Alternatively, can I move the other files I need to back up to folders inside VaultData without adversely affecting the vault performance?  I realize this would necessitate allowing users to browse to folders inside the Vault using Explorer, but I don't consider this a huge security issue.

Any other routes I've overlooked?

Thanks,
Dave Gowans

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

If you have paid support, I suggest calling them and have them step you through the process of moving the folder. I don't think it is as easy as just moving it. By the way, I suggest you install the vault onto a server, not the hard drive, that is backed up nightly. The server can also be set up to have users with different access rights.

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

If you only need to move the vault, you should back up the data, stop the PDMWorks service, move the VaultData directory to where you want it, then point the license server software to the new location.  You may have to uninstall and reinstall the license server software to do that, though.  (If you reinstall, don't forget to remove that pesky "Sample" folder.)

Thanks for the quick responses.

Ctopher, all this manipulating is going to take place on our server.  We will only be backing up selected files on this server, however.  Is this what you meant?

PDMAdmin, how do I point the license server to a new location?  Is uninstalling and reinstalling basically the same process that I thought would be painful?

FYI, I have also posed this question to our VAR, but past experience tells me I'll get better and quicker answers from this forum.

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

Usually C: is designated as the hard drive. Since you say you are using a server, all the better.
There is help in PDMW on using the Vault.
example:

Quote:

Installation instructions for the Advanced Server are available in the PDMWorks Installation and Administration Guide, including instructions for creating a virtual directory for the Web Portal client. The guide is available by clicking Help on the first installation screen. You can view and print out the guide without completing the installation.  The guide is also available after installation in <install_dir>\<application>\lang\<language>\install_pdmworks.htm where <application> is Client, Standalone, Vault, or VaultAdmin.

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

dgowans,

If you move the vault, the license server software will have to be pointed to the new location regardless of how you move the vault data.  The process I described is not the same as what you were proposing.  Try going into "Add/Remove Programs" and choose the "Change" button next to PDMWorks.  See if it will let you change the vault location.  (I cannot change it using that method.)  If that doesn't work, you will have to uninstall the PDMWorks server software and reinstall it, specifying the new vault location.

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

You can use this method to move the vault folder without unstalling and reinstalling pdm server.
Just stop PDMserver service in control panel/admin tools/services , then run "regedit" from start to edit registry, go to "HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFWARE/DESIGNSOURCE/PDMWORKS/SERVER , now you will see the vault directory in front of "rootpath" field.
Edit that to new folder you want , then close regedit and run the pdmserver from control panel.
If you didn't copy anything in new folder which you select for new vault directory , some new folders and files will be generated by starting pdmserver , otherwise pdmserver will use the same files which you copy before (e.g : obsolete folder , record files , ... )
I didn't understand your question about Backing up vault because I'm beginer in english , but I'm expert in using pdm and backing up from that , then if you have question yet , maybe I can help you if you explain it more and easier.
Best regard

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

One more thing I forgot:
Before starting PDM service again , you can add or omit any of folders in the project folder "vault\project\"
After you restart the pdmservice , pdmworks will search for any new or omited project and rebuld any record file located in "vault\pdmrc".
So you can use this method to remove any project you didn't need instead of deleting project from vaultadmin.
The advantage is deleting folders and files immidiately and directly and you can add what you need instead of checking in.
But be aware when you add any documents and restart pdmserver , some records same as "permissions, admins, properties ,..." are leaved blank.
Best regards

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

SWscience:
Do you have any problems with Vaultadmin Toolbox tag? I am talking about PDMWorks2005. I found out that the directories in ToolBox list could not be edited. Whenever I tried to edit, it gave me error "can not creat new project in the vault".

We changed toolbox folder to a new location, but I just could not add that into my toolbox directories in Vaultadmin.

Is that clear? that I am trying to add a toolbox path from which pdm will block the toolbox parts check into vault.

RE: PDMWorks vault folders

I know that changing toolbox directories has no relations to creating a project !
You can add the directories you need , manually.
Go to vault folder\pdmrcd\global.? (I don't remember the extention) , open it , you will find out the toolbox folders and the directories assigned to.
Now eddit or add the directories manually, then restart pdm service from control panel/admin tools/service
Check out the global.? again to be sure of saving changes.
If no changes were made, global.? was READ-ONLY in windows , so make write access on it and repeat these again.
One more thing, Adding a folde as a toolbox folder in vaultadmin have no effect on vault projects UNLESS pdmsevice hasn't needed permission(if yir vault is on server in network) to vault and then give you that error , So check the permission of the user which logon network and use the vault admin.

Unless above , you should to reinstall pdmsever.
BEST REGARD.
