3d laser scanning

3d laser scanning

3d laser scanning

(OP)
The company I work for recently purchase a ILRIS 3d laser scanner.  Mostly we using it within the mining industry for volume calculations, mapping mine, etc. Does anyone here see advantages to using a 3d laser scanner to collect data and inturn creating accurate 3d models within the engineering world?  I am kind of brainstorming looking for more ways to use our scanner.  Any idea will be greaty appreiciated!!

RE: 3d laser scanning

I don't think that is the right question for this forum.  You should try the Mechanical Engineering Other Topics forum for better exposure since you are intrested in volumes.

RE: 3d laser scanning

I think the question belongs to Surveying & Geomatics forum.

How about this?http://www.wired.com/news/story/0,1240,4134,00.html
or you could do surveying for others.  IF the scanner is so costly that smaller firms cannot afford one,  offer your services.
I know of people who wanted the information that a scanner system could provide but were scared off by the initial price and training required.

What about Oil and gas

RE: 3d laser scanning

One of the uses of the scanner is stockpile scanning for the electric utilities. The utility companies must determine how much coal they have on hand at year end.

Scan currently in place structures for location. Actual build is different then planned. Scan to estimate dirt work required for a specific design road.

There are hundreds of applications if measurements are required.
