Welding ASTM A27 Material
Welding ASTM A27 Material
(OP)
My factory is producing parts made of ASTM A27 70-40 grade, for a customer.
I am little concerned with the chemical properties we are producing for these parts. Currenlty we have tested the parts and below are the following results.
1.) C 0.29 Mn 1.19 Si 0.47 P 0.046 S 0.025
Does anyone know if these parts will still hold there welds?
I have checked these results with the max properties of ASTM27 A27 70-40 grade. But am uncertain of whether they will hold there welds for a long period of time? Please help me solve this.

C max - 0.25%
Mn max - 1.20%
Si max - 0.80%
S max - 0.06%
P max - 0.05%
It would appear that your casting for this particular grade is out of specification regarding maximum carbon content. Does a later edition of ASTM A 27 permit higher carbon content for Grade 70-40 or does the max carbon remain at 0.25%?
I would not be concerned so much about welds, as I would be more concerned about your nonconformance of the Grade 70-40 castings.

Do, you still feel we are out of conformance?
What is your suggestions to rectify the nonconformance?
