Welding ASTM A27 Material

Welding ASTM A27 Material

Welding ASTM A27 Material

(OP)
My factory is producing parts made of ASTM A27 70-40 grade, for a customer.

I am little concerned with the chemical properties we are producing for these parts. Currenlty we have tested the parts and below are the following results.

1.) C 0.29 Mn 1.19 Si 0.47 P 0.046 S 0.025

Does anyone know if these parts will still hold there welds?

I have checked these results with the max properties of ASTM27 A27 70-40 grade. But am uncertain of whether they will hold there welds for a long period of time? Please help me solve this.

RE: Welding ASTM A27 Material

I reviewed an older edition of ASTM A 27 Standard Specification for Steel Castings, Carbon, for General Applications. The chemical composition requirement for Grade 70-40 is as follows;

C max -  0.25%
Mn max -  1.20%
Si max -   0.80%
S max - 0.06%
P max - 0.05%

It would appear that your casting for this particular grade is out of specification regarding maximum carbon content.  Does a later edition of ASTM A 27 permit higher carbon content for Grade 70-40 or does the max carbon remain at 0.25%?

I would not be concerned so much about welds, as I would be more concerned about your nonconformance of the Grade 70-40 castings.

Max Carbon remains 0.25%

Do, you still feel we are out of conformance?

What is your suggestions to rectify the nonconformance?

RE: Welding ASTM A27 Material

Yes, per the ASTM Standard specification. The nonconformance can only be rectified between you and your customer.

RE: Welding ASTM A27 Material

Per 6.1 of A-27 and Table 1 of A-781, the max. "product" Carbon content is 0.2775%. The material is therefor nonconforming. You may wish to perform additional product testing to clear the nonconmformance. The material is, nevertheless, readily weldable with low hydrogen welding processes. Depending on thickness, preheating and PWHT may be required.
