lapping process for a one-piece flow

lapping process for a one-piece flow

(OP)
Hi, in my work we make seals for automative water pumps; we used to do all in medium sized lots, about 400 pieces; nowadays, talking about lean manufacturing, we´re trying to manage one piece at time; my problem rose in the lapping proccess of the mating face. It´s a steel based powdered metal with a diameter between 1 - 1.25". The major problem when lapping 400 pieces at the same time is cleaning.

Does any body knows an altenative to lap this pieces one at time.
Thanks in advance for your advices?

RE: lapping process for a one-piece flow

It's not clear what it is you are lapping.  Having said that, dimond impregnated films are great for micro finishing flat surfaces.

Thanks for your reply, the piece is like a washer with OD=1.160", ID=0.680" and h=0.150".We lapping it wiht diamon lapping slurry over a spining casting iron table. The problem is about cleaning, because we process 400 pieces at time, it finishes dirty.

hi gedeos, i noted your problem, i thinks if you use kerosene or toluene by flushing it on the running lapping plate, then it can wash out the material & then u can inspect the finished rings.
