Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

(OP)
I was recently assigned as rotating equipment engineer in designing a manufacturing plant...., my entire background is on static equipment and I am not so keen on rotating equipment, one of the challenging I am facing is selection of right rotating equipment Vendor/manufacturer and Equipment that match our application. I specifically need some hints on how to ask the right questions when selecting equipment? what are the criteria that VENDOR generally should meet?

Let's get this right

a) You don't know what you are doing
b) You are not keen on doing it
c) You expect people visiting this board to tell you how to do your job

It will be a while before I stop laughing, but in the meantime, I suggest you browse through a selection of books authored by Heinz P Bloch, obtain those most appropriate to your needs and read them from cover to cover

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

what sort of rotating equipment? pumps, turbines, compressors, etc. be specific.

TPL & pmover,
Let me make myself clear, I need to know under what bases and criteria I can select reciprocating pumps & compressors VENDORS if it sound that they are technically equal. i.e. I need to give a preference to one over the other before it goes to commercial bid evaluation. In this regards can you please tell me what I should do. I hope I made myself a bit clearer.

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

relax...we know you are clear/serious about your inquiry.

i now tend to somewhat agree with TPL comments, but not to the point of being sarcastic. yes, you do need direction.

i certainly would only do business with reputable suppliers of equipment in need. perhaps there are other like facilities in the area you can visit/contact and obtain references.

if like equipment are technically equal, look at the costs, schedules, place of mfg, etc. there are reasons for cost differences. use your me handbook as a guide.

what industry (oil, gas, food, pharmaceutical, etc.) is the facility for? perhaps the api stds (674-676 & 618) may be a good starting point.

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

Does the company that assigned you to this task have any standard specifications for rotating equipment?  If so, then compare the features of the equipment offered to the specifications, and note those vendors that have (or don't have) the capability of meeting all or most of the specifications, or have good reasons for why they did not meet some part of the spec.

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

Would you be interested in hiring a rotating machinery engineer? (just kidding) I would start by looking at your company's approved vendor list. If you are an end user working with a engineering firm, you might have a look at the E&C's approved vendor list. If you have contacts at other end user companies ask who they use for various applications. Bottom line is that there has been so much industry consolodation that there are really only a handful of OEMs for each type of proces plant rotating equipment, and those OEMS will be pretty competative.

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

I am a consulting rotating equipment engineer with over 30 years in the business.

It is not possible to adequately "teach" what you need to know in any online forum. In my opinion, the job you're looking to perform requires somebody with at least 5 years experience in the position. For more complex equipemt, maybe 10-15 years experience, or more. I'm still learning.

While vendors can be helpful, and will ply you endlessly with wine, women and song, you must always bear in mind that selling equipment and parts is Priority #1 with them. It takes years of experience before you will be able to know the right questions to ask the vendors, and to know when you're being fed a line of bull. I make my living sorting through all the bull.

Good luck!

RE: Rotating Equipment and Vendor selections

Tom,

I am a rotary engineer with less experience than yours. I visited your website and am impressed. Recently, I created a egroup RotaryEngineers@yahoogroups.com and am in the process of inviting select people from across the globe to join it (as long as they are active in basic/detailed engineering, construction & commissioning of rotating equipment and they are not equipment vendors).

Appreciate you joining the group to make it stronger. We are now only 3 members (1 day old group!).

Regards,
