Bonding brake matl to steel backing plate

Bonding brake matl to steel backing plate

Bonding brake matl to steel backing plate

(OP)

Ive often wondered what glue they use to bond the friction matl onto your steel backing plate on your disk brakes
I realise there is a mechanical component in the fixing  ,, as the backing plate has holes in it, but there must be an adhesive

I manufacture small clutches but they dont see the big temps you get in car brakes

Thanks in advance

RE: Bonding brake matl to steel backing plate

There are several ways to do this. With automotive drum brakes, the linings are bonded to the shoes with a phenolic adhesive and heat cured in a fixture.Several schemes are used for disc pads. Most linings are formulated with phenolic and the lining powder is molded to the backing plate. The plates sometimes have a screen spot welded in place and this gives the lining (in powder form) something to mechanically bond to when molded in place.Other plates are stippled, leaving raised protrusions to allow the molded in place lining to have a mechanical connection. With disc pads, you need some mechanical attachment to resist the shearing forces.
