SW Explorer Problem

SW Explorer Problem

SW Explorer Problem

(OP)
Why is it when using SW Explorer to copy a part and the drawing of that part the references to the drawing still point to the original part and not the copied part?

It seemed to work before but now it is not. Does anyone have any input to this?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

RE: SW Explorer Problem

What version of SW are you using?  Are you choosing to "copy children" when you copy the drawing in order to copy the part?

After the fact you can also replace the model reference in the drawing with another part.

RE: SW Explorer Problem

I never had a problem with this until I upgraded to SP4.2. Now there is a bug in it. It is not 100%. I did copy children, but for some reason decided to look at old parts. My VAR turned it in to SolidWorks.

Thanks ctopher,

I thought I was doing things right. Because I did not have this issue when I used it in 2004 (SP 4.0). But since I upgraded to SP 4.2 I have had a problem with it. Does anyone know if the issue is fixed in 2005?

engAlright,

I know that I can chage the references of the drawing to the other part manually, but if that is the case what is the point of using solidworks explorer if I have to do that. To answer your question I am choosing "copy children" when copying the drawing. I suppose I could open the part and do a "where used" instead. I guess it depends on the user.

I have answered my own question. I did a simple copy in SW Explorer 2005 and the references are working fine. The good thing is that you can use SW Explorer 2005 and still open the files in 2004.

RE: SW Explorer Problem

I recently had a problem where I copied a large assembly and all its children before making major modifications  (Using SW2005 SP.01). Near the end of the modification process the whole thing became very unstable and fell apart.  I finished up suppressing everything and starting from the top fixing each part.  I got a number of messages that indicated some parts were referencing the original assembly.  I could not find any problems by stepping through sketches and mates but by redrawing suspect sketches the problem was eventually corrected.

Another issue is that I get the impression that SW2005 is less tolerant of overdefined mates.  I think that most people overdefine to some extent in the strictest sense but my feeling is that 2004 had a greater tolerance margin.

I suspect also that this is affecting response speed that some are experiencing going from 04 to 05.
