Help with BOM's

Help with BOM's

Help with BOM's

(OP)
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know how to export a bill of materials to an excel file? I looked in help and it told me this:

Click the bill of materials on the drawing sheet.

1. Click File, Save As.

2. The Save as type is set to Excel Files (*.xls) by default.

3. Enter a file name, and click Save.

You can use the saved bill of materials in Excel, or as an OLE object in other applications. The saved file is not linked to the bill of materials in the drawing; edits to one do not affect the other.

After reading the above instructions I did it as follows, but when I try to save as a (*.xls) file the option is not there in the pull down menu.

Do I have to do something else before saving?

RE: Help with BOM's

What you describe is for the Excel type BOM only. If you are using the SW BOM you can only "save as" a .sldbomtbt, .csv or .txt file.

Ohh Ok,

How do I create an excel-based BOM? And what is the purpose of having two different BOM's?

RE: Help with BOM's

Highlight a view then Insert > Tables > Excel based Bill of materials.
Note ... you cannot have both types of BOM in a drawing set.

SW created its own BOM for people who do not have or want excel on their computers & to make it more user friendly????

Also note ... the .csv & .txt files created from the SW BOMs can be opened in Excel.

yeah we tried saving in those formats and the information between the columns and rows became all jumbled and out of order.

Can the excel based BOM be automatically updated or do you have to always re-save the information each time it is updated?

I guess if it has to re-saved each time I could try to create a macro to handle that.

RE: Help with BOM's

Both BOMs can be automatically updated while in the drawing, but the saved Excel, .csv & .txt files cannot be. They are not linked to the drawing BOM.
