T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

(OP)
We presently use T-1 steel for our lifting bale on our products.  This is welded to A36 plates or structural steel.  Needs to be wear restant due to the contact of the crane hook to the inside of the bale.  Is there another material that could be used?  T-1 is getting hard to find since it is used as armor plate.

RE: T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

We've been running into the same problem on the scarcity of this product.  We've replaced some items with IPSCO's 100XF.  It has strength equaling ASTM A514 (T-1) and good toughness characteristics. We've also looked at CleanForm 100.  Both are HSLA steels (no heat treatment).

I am curious to know where you heard that T-1 is being used for armor applications.  It makes sense to me now, but I originally thought it just wasn't popular enough to keep producing under current market conditions (silly me).

RE: T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

For replacement of T-1 steel in strength/wear applications with good toughness, we have used abrasion resistant grade steel plates (AR-400, AR-500) supplied by the following;

The HARDOX quench and tempered steel plates exhibit excellent strength and toughness based on their specific heat treatment process. There are other suppliers that can provide similar grades of abrasion resistant plates that are readily weldable to A-36.

RE: T-1 Alloy Steel Replacement

Astralloy Steel Products offer a range of steels that may be of interest.  Astralloy-V  is the top of the line regarding strength and toughness as well as abrasion resistance.
