Mining Electrics

Mining Electrics

Hello all,

Does anyone know of an electrical engineering masters program that concentrates on mining electrics - disgtribution, protection etc, specifically for the mines.

Best Regards,
TULUM

Seems like not, with the lack of response to your query.

Nonetheless, the few mining schools in the U.S. have track records of coordinating multi-discipline or mixed-discipline M.S. or M.Eng. programs. Also, there are numerous Electrical Engineering departments which probably would be very happy to consider your ideas.  Finally, MSHA and NIOSH (again, stateside) may have good suggestions.

It can be fun setting up your own M.S. program, I did same thirty years ago and many others have.  Some schools don't allow such latitude, others embrace the initiative.

Try contacting some of the mining & electrical equipment manufacturers, they may have a line on power or instrumentation approaches which could be good for a masters.  Also, the mines themselves may be a great source for ideas, perhaps including support.

Gluck Auf, and have fun.

Thaks for the response backfill.

I will take your advice and phone some of my contacts in the industry.

RE: Mining Electrics

Glad Backfill finally replied- I meant to but...
I don't know of any school that specailizes in mining electrics- in my experience , very few mines even have electrical engineers on staff, although most of the places have been rather small - we don't use engineering consultants unless we have either a major installation or major problem- there are lots of engineering firms that have great EE's but I assume after their degrees they worked in the mines first, then moved on- I don't think the mining field is that much different than others except
mines have to adapt to expansion on a daily basis- I guess what separates some of the equipment are the regulations, especially for coal- our biggies are OESC and CSA M421-93-even when I did my degree there was absolutely no mention of power (electricity) - I assume the EE's did it!
