Is there a reference publication that gives the design formulas of the canted coil spring (as featured in the Bal Seal Co.). I am interested in the design formulas that calculates forces, deflections and stresses as a function of the coil diamter, wire diameter, number of coiles canted angle etc.

RE: Canted coil spring formulas-design

Mark's Handbook does an ok job of it, there are others which more or less mimick the classical textbook:

Mechanical Springs, 2nd Edition
Wahl, A.M.
Spring Manufacturers Institute
2001 MidWest Road, Suite 106
Oak Brook, IL 60521

Thank you for your response. However, when you refer to the  references mentioned in you post you mean that you have seen the formulation for "Canted coil springs - Garter like springs" or just as good general reference for mechanical spring design and analysis?

The Canted coil spring - Garter like springs is a patent of the Bal Seal Co. fro 1989. I am looking for analysis and formulations that others may perform on this type of spring in the academic or anywhere else.

RE: Canted coil spring formulas-design

The textbook has an excellent appendix discussing the theory of springs, then advances the discussion by developing many of the equations from first principles.  As such, Wahl deals with the influence of cross sectional geometry, effect of tapering, etc.  Perhaps it will offer you the academic discussion you are looking for.

Thank you, I have those books and many other books and references concernings spring design and analysis. However, I was hoping that I will not have to develop the formulations myself. I have found NASA documenet where they did finite element analysis for such springs and it gave some ideas how to follow and someting to compare to.
